Practice Swim 11/1-11/4 ?

Postby stella_stink on Sat Oct 31, 2009 5:16 am

Anybody in town, or coming in, doing a channel swim on the aforementioned dates? I'm a local, and live near the course....there's safety in numbers, so lets all go have a swim....

I'm coming in on the 4th, hoping for the morning, depending on how the drive goes (15 hours). I'd be more than happy to be part of a group swim in the channel! I'll keep my eyes glued on this thread for sure.

I'm arriving on the 5th in the afternoon....and would be up for an afternoon swim on the 5th or a morning swim on the 6th...anyone game? brian.ray@planet-x-usa.com if you want to set up a meeting. We can leave one car at the exit and one where we start to make it easy!!

I have two people interested in a Friday morning swim. Please post the details when it gets closer. Can someone check the tide (in or out) for Friday morning? That makes a huge difference.

Definitely up for the swim on Friday am...this would be best if we can get a small group together...safety in numbers, especially since the channel is NOT closed on friday.
I did a tide report search, and following is what I found:

Fri 6 LOW TIDE: 4:00 AM EST / 0.12 ft , HIGH TIDE: 10:08 AM EST / 4.70 ft , LOW TIDE: 4:49 PM EST / 0.50 ft, HIGH TIDE 10:32 PM EST / 3.70 ft,
SUNRISE: 6:35 AM EST SUNSET: 5:13 PM EST

So, based on this, a morning swim around 8am would be ideal...current will be at our back (like race morning). Don't want to do TOO much before the race, but how about 1 mile +/-?

If we travel together, we can leave our car at the "exit point" to minimize the "hike."

8 am Friday sounds great. I am coming in Thursday evening. I will check postings to see what the final details are going to be.

Does anyone know if we can exit at the marina? Is there a ladder there all the time or just for the race? If yes, we could swim the sprint course from the September race. We could park at at the park (T1) location.

Another option would be to swim from the full start to the 1/2 start. The only problem is that this would be 1.2 miles. I was looking to do 700 to 1000 meters. There is a sandy area to exit and parking along the street.

FYI - I am interested in doing a short ride and run as well.

Thanks for setting this up. Count me in for Fri 8AM. I'll do a very short bike and run too. Last year we were able to exit the channel just before the causeway bridge. There's a little parking lot there, maybe we could walk up the channel a bit and swim back?

Good luck to everyone racing.

I will be coming in Thursday and staying at the beach. I would like to get in on the Friday 8 am swim. I would prefer something 1000 yards or less if that's possible. Thanks to all the locals for the info and for helping set this up.

So is the plan to meet around 7:45 near the causeway bridge (last bridge before ocean)? Walk down the road and swim back. Go for a short bike and run. If yes, see everyone at 7:45 am Friday.

Hey all,
I swam this morning and the water is fabulous! For those who have never done this swim before an idea is to start down at the Coast Guard Station on the beach to simulate race day and head North in the channel. If you don't want to go all the way to the half starting point there are plenty of exits along the way or if you want to put in further go all the way to Blockade Runner and exit on the beach there. Wrightsville Beach doesn't ticket the meters after Nov 1 so parking anywhere is OK. Just a suggestion to get those who have never seen the in water beach start a chance to experience before race day. There will be no ladders at Sea Path until race day. I would NOT recommend swimming across the channel to Sea Path Friday morning. There were plenty of active boats this morning due to the fantastic weather and with the channel being closed on Sat many weekend fisherman may try to get out on Friday instead.

Can you describe "fabulous? Am a little anxious about the water, (coldness) especially given the low temperature predicted for race day.

I'm here! Still interested in a Friday swim for sure.

I'm going to pass on Thursday for some well needed R & R after 2 long days of driving. 17 hours on the roads, my back doth protest!

I'm at the Hampton on Old East Road, if you're in the area & want to car pool (no bikes though, no rack with me!) Friday, let me know here!

I'm fine with starting there, but am up to whatever. I'd like to swim at least 1000M or so for the feel.
